A Journey through the World of Bees

Mark Grieves is the founder Black Dog Honey Bees and will take us on a journey through the world of bees, where knowledge meets passion, and discover the rewards of understanding and protecting these remarkable insects. He will also be selling honey and beeswax products.

A Vicorian Head Gardener
Dr Francis Burroughes, BEM

IDr Burroughes proved a popular speaker with the Club last year and will be returning to talk to the Club, this time to give a talk about life on a Victorian Country Estate which has now entirely vanished. His own father started his career in horticulture as a gardener;s boy on a large estate before World War One.

This event will be ticket only. Free to pre booked Club members. A limited number of visitor tickets will be available at £8 in advance or £10 on the door (if not sold out in advance).

Julian Sutton runs Desirable Plants in Totnes – which specialises in different and unusual herbaceous perennials. His talk will celebrate plants which flower in the strange stop-start season before winter has ended and spring has really begun.

Glorious Gardens: The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) in Devon

Julia Tremlett will talk generally about the NGS and then show us slides of gardens in Devon open in 2024. She has opened her own garden for the NGS for 33 years and was treasurer for Devon for over 20 years.

Rob Vincent is one of the owners of Exeter based Hutch Houseplants, and regularly appears on Toby Buckland’s show on BBC Radio Devon. He will be sharing his top tips for success with houseplants and will bring a range of plants for sale and display.

Have you ever wondered where our garden plants come from? Here is the fascinating story of how many of our favourite garden flowers and vegetables arrived in this country. Exmouth Garden Club Annual Spring Public Plant Sale

Saturday 11th May 10am-4pm at 82 Hulham Road EX8 3LA

Over recent years the Club has held a popular public Spring Plant Sale each year at 82 Hulham Road Exmouth and we will be doing so again this year on Sat 11th May from 10am - 4pm . Always reasonable prices but please bring cash. Quality plant donations also welcomed - contact the Club Chairperson in advance please.

Peter Cantrill, an expert nurseryman who runs the wholesale nursery Dayspring plants near Exeter will bring a selection of unusual herbaceous plants, which he will be talking about and selling at the end.

Bex Flintham

Bex Flintham has worked in wildlife conservation for over 30 years and has been foraging for wild foods since childhood. She has worked for the National Trust, Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB, and is currently senior educator at Wildwood near Honiton.

Ken Thompson

Ken Thompson is an ecologist who spent most of his career at Sheffield University. He is now retired and lives in Devon. He still writes and lectures extensively, including teaching on the Kew Horticulture Diploma and has written several books on gardening and popular science.

After successfully trialing reintroducing more summer garden visits in 2023 we are hoping to arrange more for 2024 Details will be advised in Member newsletters; the Member WhatsApp Group and at Club meetings. Please note any costs associated with attending these visits such as for admission charges or refreshments are not normally covered by your Club membership subscription and will be the responsibility of those choosing to attend.
